When students are having trouble completing homework, may I
suggest a checklist for helping them.
When your student is halfway through the
work they brought home, have them self assess using the criteria listed. (Go over it with them)
o
Yesterday I focused for ___ minutes, and today I
can focus for ___ minutes.
o
Before reaching out for help, I have tried to
figure out what is confusing me.
o
I created a daily planner for the work I need to
accomplish tonight and I have it out
o
I did the most difficult work first
o
I identified when I started daydreaming and
brought myself back on task
o
I focused on the work despite the distractions (what
were they; maybe you could eliminate some of them.)
o
If I got tired, I worked on a different part of
my work to give myself a break without stopping my homework.
The goal of parents should be to
create independent learners who rely less and less on us as they grow as
students. Some take a long time to
achieve independence but this checklist can begin to identify ways to improve. And
don’t forget to celebrate small steps in the right direction.

Tourette’s Support
Meeting
One of
our TLC Parents has found a spot for their first Central Valley Tourette's
Syndrome Support Group Meeting! It is an informal setting where
people with TS and their families can meet with other families to
socialize and to talk about TS and share stories. Gather with friends and meet
new ones.

neighbors about our parents parking in their driveways. These neighbors are
very frustrated and are ready to call the police. Remember you would not want
someone blocking your driveway so please be considerate and park legally and
responsively.

Gold PCS
Primary achieved an API score of 928! Students passed their
goal and will Jump for Joy September 20th. Each class will get an
hour to play in bounce houses to celebrate this wonderful accomplishment.
Homecoming is
September 27, 2013. The theme this year is Pixar. Primary Gold has picked the
movie A Bug’s Life for their float. The parade starts at 4:00. Dismissal on
this day will be at 2:30. All students are welcome to walk behind the float. We
will start lining up at 3:15.
It is time for the first Box Tops contest for the new school
year! Bring your Box Tops to your child’s homeroom teacher. They will be
collected September 27th. The
winning class will get a treat.
The first annual Tracy Learning Center Ribs and Chili
Cook-off is October 5, 2013. If you are
interested in entering the cook-off to prove you have what it takes to earn
bragging rights around town for a year and a prize, please contact Loanne at

Sapphire PCS
The Sapphire Team had an incredible week!
Thank you to the many parents that have responded to our
call for help on the Sapphire float.
Homecoming is fast approaching! We will be putting together the pieces for
the float on Wednesday, September 18th and 25th at 4PM.
If you can join us please do! Our theme is the Pixar short movies, in
particular the birds’ movie.
We still need donations of cotton batting – the stuffing for
soft toys. This can be found in many stores including Michaels and Walmart. We
also need spray paint: black, white, silver and sapphire blue; glitter, rope
and chicken wire.
Students will be dressed in blue as the little birds to walk
behind the float. We would love all the kids to have a blue boa to wear for
feathers if at all possible. Feel free to get as creative as you like as far as
your student’s bird costume goes, but it should be blue! Please no Angry Birds!
PCS ART
This Week in Art: The K/1’s used watercolors to paint
bright and colorful backgrounds for a project that will be continued next
week. The 2/3’s are
learning all about shapes. They
finished their organic leaf designs and then did a cut paper design with
positive and negative shapes. The
4th grade Multicultural Art classes worked on Mola designs from
Panama, using markers and cut paper.
This Week in Art: The Discovery Art elective class
learned about Henri Matisse and began a paper collage influenced by his style
of art. The Discovery Art
Club is drawing Zentangles which will soon be made into tube sculptures.
PHSA has been painting their Ceramic Castles.
PCS PE
We want to recognize some
students that earned shoe tokens this week for following our PE motto
"Respect and Responsibility" P7 Darnell Johnson,
P2 Chrysuel Cunanan, P5 Brandon
Locke, and P1 Javier Elias.

DCS 5th/6th
This
week at Discovery we have been feeling a need to develop in our students new
interpersonal skills as they begin to discover the power they have as
participants in their social communities. Please help us by talking to your
child about ways in which they can bring joy, respect, and enthusiasm to our
wonderful learning community.
After
School Sports:
The
After School Sports program will start on Tuesday, September 24. The theme for
this program is basketball. Students will participate in activities and drills
that increase their fundamental skills. The program will be held every Tuesday,
Wednesday, and Thursday from 4:15 to 5:30 PM. The five week program ends
Thurday, October 24. Students in grades 5-8 are invited to join. Applications
for the program are available in the front office. The fee is $30 for one child
and $10 for additional children. Submit applications by Friday, September 20th.
Science
News:
Two
application due dates are next Friday!
If
students are interested in participating in Science Olympiad or Dinner with a
Scientist submit the application/essay to Ms. Pelaez by September 20th. Both activities are limited on space. Dinner
with a scientist is only open to three sixth grade students so students must
demonstrate a passion for science by writing a compelling essay explaining why
they should be selected to attend.
Gold Pod:
An informational meeting for parents regarding this year's Science Camp
has been tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, October 8 at 6:00PM.

Congratulations
to the students who submitted a poem to be published by Creative Communication
in the next edition of A Celebration of Poets.
In a letter from the publishing company, we
were told "All of your students were accepted. This is a very atypical situation." Normally about half of the poems sent in are
not accepted for publication, but these poems were "true to form and did
that form very well." "The end
result is all your poems were accepted."
Awesome
job!! We can't wait to have all these poems published!!

Preparation for the homecoming parade continues; we are always looking for any ideas or materials parents might be able to help with. Please contact Mr. Mitri and smitri@tracylc.net if you are able to help out.

It is Science Olympiad time again! Applications for anyone who is interested in joining our team are due to Ms. Pelaez or Ms. Powers by Friday September 20th, 2013. If you have any questions please email our Science Fair Team Leaders at: karenlynn79@gmail.com orwsnell@tracylc.net
The team will be run an after school/at home with parents and Science Olympiad teachers assisting. There will be some time during school but we want anyone interested to come to the meeting - you will not be excluded if you are already in band or academic pentathlon.

Registration for the PSAT (Preliminary SAT) exams will start
next week! The test will be at MHS on
Saturday, October 19th from 7:30am – 11:30am. This a great and affordable way for students
to practice for the SAT. The test is open to students in grades 9th
– 11th, but 11th grade students are highly encouraged to
take this test. There is an opportunity
for Juniors to be entered in the National Merit Scholarship program. The fee is
$15.00 and space is extremely limited…please register as soon as possible. Sign up in the Counseling Office Room M2
Fall college tour field trips are just around the corner –
field trips are offered to 10th, 11th, and 12th
grade students. Our first trip is next
week to a Construction/Apprenticeship Trade Fair and The Delta College Stockton
Campus on Friday, September 20th.
The cost is $18.00 which includes lunch.
During the Trade Fair there will be many opportunities for students to
experience hands on demonstrations in many areas such as electrical, roofing,
masonry, crane operating, and more. We
have extended our deadline to sign up through Wed, September 18th. Please have your student pick up a permission
slip if he/she is interested in joining us on the field trip. Other upcoming field trips will be to UC
Davis, Sacramento State, San Francisco State, and Expressions College.
Thank you to the wonderful visitors we had this week in our
Career Education classes: Brian McCann- Carrington College, Joan Griffin and
Nancy McDonald- FIDM.
Red Hot Community Service
Opportunities
1. Starting Tonight, Friday, September 13th
from 5-10pm The Mountain House Sports Inc. is hosting an Island Night
Fundraiser. Students will be helping with set up and clean, students are
welcome to attend the event free of charge. Volunteers need to be 16 years
or older. The event will take place at Questa School: 685 N. Montebello
Street, Mountain House. Please contact

September 14th, Eagal Lakes will be hosting their annual Lil Mud
Runner from
7:30-1:30p.m. Students will help
with set up, directing traffic, assisting in the mud pits and clean up. If you

either of these meetings to attend, but your attendance at ONE of them is mandatory.

This year’s Health
Fair is packed with activities and services for all ages and families! Some of
the exciting services will include: Health Screenings, Flu Shots, Vision
Vouchers, Health Insurance Info, and resources for a healthy lifestyle.
The 11th
Annual UC Davis Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Profession Conference will be held
Saturday and Sunday October 12 &13. The event will take place in the
Pavilion at UC Davis from 8-6pm. This is a great way for students who have an
interest in the medical field to learn more about their choice of profession.
It features dean and admissions from over 225 health-professions schools. The
UC Davis Conference has been sold out the last 10 years, so please register
early.
