Happy Halloween from TLC

Happy Halloween from TLC!

We are allowing PCS, DCS and PHSA , to wear costumes tomorrow. There will be trick or treating for the younger students and it should be a fun day for all but we do have some guidlines that ALL students need to follow.

  • Costumes must be appropriately themed for school.
  • No weapons of any kind.
  • In the classrooms, no masks or hats or gloves.
  • Please remember we are K-12 campus so use good judgment.  If the costumes is too scary, gory or revealing please do not wear it to school.
We know students are excited to share their costumes with their friends and we want to make it a fun day for all.

Millennium High students will not be dressing up for Halloween.

Lately I have received many calls and e-mails about concerns parents have regarding their child being “bullied”.  I realize that we have many posters up all over our schools about respect and not being a bully and I know that it is a real concern in the modern world we live in.  This month we have focus on educating and advising students on how to deal with the problem.  Our efforts have helped give a voice to those students who may not normally speak up if there is a problem.  There are some clear distinctions I would like to make with regards to bullying.

1.       Name calling is mean, and it is hurtful, but in itself it is not bullying.
2.       Bullies threaten and force students do give up lunches, money or other things.  They are usually physical and verbal and intimidate over long periods of time.  I actually feel that we do not have that sort of bully on campus.
3.       On the other hand, we have students who are insensitive and mean and do say hurtful things to others.  This is not right and should be stopped, but there are things that can be done to stop this.
a.       First and foremost the student being called names needs to take a stand.  The student needs to use his or her own  strong voice to say, “Stop!” and if that does not work, the student needs to report it to a teacher and ask the teacher to meet with the child and the name caller so that the child can once again explain it is to stop happening.
b.      If this happens, in most cases it stops.  If it does not stop, the student needs to go back to the teacher and let that teacher know it is still happening.  (if the child never returns, the teacher assumes it has stopped.)
c.       Then when the student returns, the complaint should be in writing as a referral and reported to me.  If it does not stop at my level, suspension would be the next recourse.  Most of the time, it never goes that far.
d.      The other thing to remember is that students often hear what others are saying by way of another student.  It needs to be directly stated….not second hand.
e.      One other thing, students who are called names sometimes respond with name calling as well.  That does not help…it fuels the fire.
4.       If a student is having a problem in one class, we encourage the student should not wait until her or she is in another class to talk about it.  (For example, it happened in PE, but the student talks about it to the English teacher.)

I agree, we all need to protect our children, and my job is to keep the students safe and secure, but in addition to that, we all need to help our children to become advocates for themselves as well.  We teach students so much about learning and knowledge but we also focus on learning how to be a strong successful person.

Sapphire PCS
The Sapphire Team had a wonderful week!

P1 students learned about the life cycle of a pumpkin and did a really cool experiment with weight and capacity. They got to predict whether a pumpkin would float or not and then they actually got to put the pumpkin in water to see the results. P1 students are also very excited about their upcoming Pumpkin Patch “fieldtrip!”
P6 students have started learning about the food chain.  They have also been busy writing about and drawing Halloween monsters and ghouls in writers’ workshop.    See some of their work in the office hallway!
P5 visited a PHSA classroom this week! The 7th and 8th grade students presented their final projects- a book about The Call of the Wild to us. It was a wonderful experience for all!
We will be celebrating Red Ribbon week the week of October 28th – November 1st.  Our theme is Band Against Bullying. We will be planning lots of activities throughout the week.  Each classroom will be creating a song, chant or poem about banding against bullying and presenting it at unity to the Sapphire Team.  Monday will be P5’s presentation; Tuesday P6 will be presenting and Wednesday P1 will be presenting their song, chant or poem.  Parents, as always, are welcome to attend our Unity. In addition to our unity presentations we will be wearing different colors each day….. your child may wear shirts, pants, shorts, jeans, hair ties, etc of that color.
Monday – STAND UP against Bullying…..We will all wear RED.
Tuesday – SPEAK UP against Bullying…. We will all wear bright NEON colors
Wednesday – BE A FRIEND to stop bullying……We will all wear YELLOW.
Thursday - Halloween festivities.
Friday – STOP BULLYING….. We will all wear BLUE.

Helpful Tips:
Please remember that there is NO supervision before 7:45 in front of the school.
Do not leave your car unattended during carline; this has been causing us problems getting carline started in the afternoon.
Please make sure that your PCS child is supervised at all times after pick up in carline and while you are waiting for your DCS students.  PSC students are often playing/throwing tan bark and shouting right outside the administrative offices and classrooms where learning is still going on.

Flu season has started to creep our way causing some students to remain homebound for a day or more. If you find your child in this position you may request missed work from his/her teachers. Unfortunately, many assignments can only be completed in class. Plenty of rest is especially important for a quick recovery.

This week has opened my eyes to how hurtful missing assignments can be to a student's grades and their learning.  When assignments are missing the consequences go beyond the zero that goes in the grade book.  The student now loses out on the learning that happens during that class period because of not being prepared for the lesson.  They are not able to ask questions or push their understanding without having completed the homework ahead of time.  And finally there are the assessments that become harder to prepare for when you are behind in the work.
As teachers, we try to stay on top of students and their work and we also provide many opportunities to get help or extra time to complete work.  We know hoe important the those small assignments can be.  As parents, you can also provide support by checking agendas, calenders and web pages to remind students of what is due.  Parents are encouraged to also contact teachers if they see students struggling with work so we can get them the help they need to succeed.  Together we can make a difference and it is the little things that go a long way

Oct. 11, 2013                                                                                        Vol. 10 No.10
Virginia Stewart

I would like to share a letter I received this week complementing several of our TLC Students. Letters like these make me very proud of our students here at the Tracy Learning Center.

Virginia,

I am writing on behalf of the Stockton-San Joaquin County Public Library to communicate a message of thanks to some of your students and staff. This past April, I had reached out to a few local high school art teachers for some help in promoting an art project that the library was working on to coincide with the public library's annual One Book, One San Joaquin community Reading program. Your art instructor, Matthew Young responded to my appeal, and helped me get several of your high school's art students to participate in our community project. Those students’ names are Gabby Ramirez; Estefania Torres; Jen Pereira; Matthew Leal; Ericka Dominguez; Rheagan Higbe; Savannah Saleymah; Serena Cho; Brittany Montejano; and Jacob Bracna-Gonzalez. These awesome kids, spent their summer, and part of this school year volunteering their time in support of the library and I just wanted to write to you to communicate the library's deep and sincere appreciation.

The program was titled "Reading Meets Art: My Ideal Bookshelf" and profiled 35 members of our community, ranging from community leaders, to heads of organizations, to the everyday library users. The library asked these subjects to identify their 10-15 favorite books and then asked them to write a few paragraphs about why they enjoyed those selections. From this set of books and write-ups we needed 35 artists to paint/render these bookshelves for the public to visualize. This is where your student's and Mr. Young helped out the library. They spent their time and efforts to paint the favorite books for people that they didn't even know. Each of them jumped at the chance to participate, and received little in return. The concept was borrowed from a book called "My Ideal Bookshelf," and we borrowed the concept to take a county spin on it.

Our One Book program just ended a week ago, and am now wanting to thank a few key people that helped us make this program a success. I'm attaching a few links from a blog we used to announce the program, as well as a few mentions of the program we have in the Stockton Record newspaper, and library web pages. We just thought you'd get a kick out of seeing what wonderful things your teens were doing this summer.

A huge thank you to the young, talented, and civic minded teenagers you have in your school that went forward with a community project with no thought of recognition for themselves and a special thank you to Matthew Young who facilitated the process on behalf of the library. You should be proud.

I'm attaching articles that you may read if you wish about the art program to illustrate the larger impact this had on literacy in our community.

We will be having a canned food drive in November. Each classroom will be collecting a canned food item to donate for the holidays. Information about his fundraiser will be coming soon.

The weather is starting to get colder, be sure to send your student to school with a jacket!
Jackets should be labeled with your students’ name.

Morning carline starts at 7:45. There are not teachers at morning carline until 7:45. Please do not drop your child off and leave before 7:45 in the morning as they will be unsupervised until 7:45.

It’s that time of the year again…students at the Tracy Learning Center can make a difference on “National Make a Difference Day”. As part of a school-wide project, TLC will be participating in a donation project to help the McHenry House of Tracy-Family Shelter. Our goal is to provide much needed household supplies to the seven families awaiting help at the McHenry House.

Primary Gold has been asked to collect  single rolls of toilet paper. Students can bring them to their homeroom teacher. Collections will start Monday, October 21st and end Friday, October 25th.

Sapphire PCS
The Sapphire Team had a fabulous week!

The student leadership team had their second meeting of the year; they are planning an event for the entire school and we can’t wait to see how exciting it is!
P1 read Duck for President   this week, we then voted and have been busy graphing the results of the election during Math.  The students are engaged in reading and get better at it with every week that passes.

P6 had their first AR party; this was for those students who reached their goal for reading in the last 6 weeks.  They have retested and will have a new AR goal coming home on Monday.
P5 has been working on factors. We have learned how to find the prime factors using a factor tree ladder. We have worked on finding the greatest common factor (GCF). This will be useful when we move to fractions.

Since the month of October is National Anti- Bullying month; we have been discussing Bullying and how our school has no tolerance for it, you will see many wonderful posters on campus that the students have made. Please ask your child about our discussions.
Please remember that there is NO supervision before 7:45 in front of the school.
Please make sure that you layer the clothing your child wears each day to school, as our mornings are getting chilly, and LABEL their clothing with their name.
Did you know that Study club is every day of the week, except Wednesday; this is a great place for your child to come and get homework completed with a teachers help.

PCS ART
This week in Art:  The K/1’s practiced their cutting and gluing skills while finishing their Apple Art project. The 2/3’s used the Element of Art, Texture, to make lots of painted paper.  What fun we had! We read the book “Pie in the Sky” by Lois Ehlert and began making paper collages using the painted paper. In 4th grade Multicultural Art, we finished the Rainsticks and learned about the next country in our travels – Haiti.

PHSA 7th and 8th

We have had another great week in PHSA.  Our anti-bullying campaign is underway.  We are proud of the efforts that students have put in to their posters.  It is a  great way to get the message out.

Science Olympiad event sign up forms have been mailed home to parent coaches and hard copies have been past out to our team members.  Please return the forms to Ms. Powers by October 18th.

A friendly reminder to all parents and students.  It is important work is complete and on time.  We do a lot at school but often, work may need to be done at home as well.  Work that is not done or incomplete prevents students from learning and is the reason we put so much emphasis on student work.  Students that do not complete their work suffer and we have consequences in place to prevent that.  If you ever have trouble or have questions, be sure to speak to the teacher.  We love to help!

MHS
Midterms are over and it’s time to refocus on the 2nd half of the semester.  Progress report cards were mailed out yesterday.  Please be on the lookout for them.  If you do not receive them in the mail by next week, contact the main office to verify that we have the correct mailing address on file.  As a reminder, we offer a free homework support room on Tues, Wed, and Thurs in room M14 from 4pm – 4:45pm.

On October 24th, Mrs. Stewart will be conducting a “How to Study” workshop in the homework support room from 4pm – 4:45pm.  Students and parents are welcome!  Additional information was included with the progress reports.
