I would like to share a
letter I received this week complementing several of our TLC Students. Letters
like these make me very proud of our students here at the Tracy Learning
Center.
Virginia,
I am writing on behalf of the Stockton-San
Joaquin County Public Library to communicate a message of thanks to some of
your students and staff. This past April, I had reached out to a few local high
school art teachers for some help in promoting an art project that the library
was working on to coincide with the public library's annual One Book, One San
Joaquin community Reading program. Your art instructor, Matthew Young responded
to my appeal, and helped me get several of your high school's art students to
participate in our community project. Those students’ names are Gabby Ramirez; Estefania Torres; Jen
Pereira; Matthew Leal; Ericka Dominguez; Rheagan Higbe; Savannah Saleymah;
Serena Cho; Brittany Montejano;
and Jacob Bracna-Gonzalez. These
awesome kids, spent their summer, and part of this school year volunteering
their time in support of the library and I just wanted to write to you to
communicate the library's deep and sincere appreciation.
The program was titled "Reading Meets Art: My Ideal Bookshelf" and profiled 35 members of our community, ranging from community leaders, to heads of organizations, to the everyday library users. The library asked these subjects to identify their 10-15 favorite books and then asked them to write a few paragraphs about why they enjoyed those selections. From this set of books and write-ups we needed 35 artists to paint/render these bookshelves for the public to visualize. This is where your student's and Mr. Young helped out the library. They spent their time and efforts to paint the favorite books for people that they didn't even know. Each of them jumped at the chance to participate, and received little in return. The concept was borrowed from a book called "My Ideal Bookshelf," and we borrowed the concept to take a county spin on it.
Our One Book program just ended a week ago, and am now wanting to thank a few key people that helped us make this program a success. I'm attaching a few links from a blog we used to announce the program, as well as a few mentions of the program we have in the Stockton Record newspaper, and library web pages. We just thought you'd get a kick out of seeing what wonderful things your teens were doing this summer.
A huge thank you to the young, talented, and civic minded teenagers you have in your school that went forward with a community project with no thought of recognition for themselves and a special thank you to Matthew Young who facilitated the process on behalf of the library. You should be proud.
I'm attaching articles that you may read if you wish about the art program to illustrate the larger impact this had on literacy in our community.

Gold PCS
Golden Highlights:
Red Ribbon Week is right around
the corner. This year Red Ribbon Week is October 28-November 1. Our theme this
year is "Band Against Bullying." Students have been discussing
bullying in their classrooms and creating posters. Check out some of their
posters around the campus.
This year's Halloween parade
will be Thursday, October 31st at 9:00 on the field. Parents are welcome to
attend this event.
We will be having a canned food
drive in November. Each classroom will be collecting a canned food item to
donate for the holidays. Information about his fundraiser will be coming soon.
The weather is starting to get colder, be
sure to send your student to school with a jacket!
Jackets should be labeled with your students’ name.
Morning
carline starts at 7:45. There are not teachers at morning carline until 7:45.
Please do not drop your child off and leave before 7:45 in the morning as they
will be unsupervised until 7:45.
It’s that time of the year
again…students at the Tracy Learning Center can make a difference on “National
Make a Difference Day”. As part of a school-wide project, TLC will be
participating in a donation project to help the McHenry House of Tracy-Family
Shelter. Our goal is to provide much needed household supplies to the seven
families awaiting help at the McHenry House.
Primary Gold has been asked to
collect single rolls of toilet paper.
Students can bring them to their homeroom teacher. Collections will start
Monday, October 21st and end Friday, October 25th.
Sapphire PCS
The Sapphire Team had a fabulous week!
The student
leadership team had their second meeting of the year; they are planning an
event for the entire school and we can’t wait to see how exciting it is!
P1 read Duck for President this week, we then voted and have been busy
graphing the results of the election during Math. The students are engaged in reading and get
better at it with every week that passes.
P6 had their first AR party; this was for those students who
reached their goal for reading in the last 6 weeks. They have retested and will have a new AR
goal coming home on Monday.
P5 has been working on factors. We have learned how to find
the prime factors using a factor tree ladder. We have worked on finding the
greatest common factor (GCF). This will be useful when we move to fractions.
Since the month of October is National Anti- Bullying month;
we have been discussing Bullying and how our school has no tolerance for it,
you will see many wonderful posters on campus that the students have made.
Please ask your child about our discussions.
Please remember that
there is NO supervision before 7:45 in front of the school.
Please make sure that you layer the clothing your child
wears each day to school, as our mornings are getting chilly, and LABEL their
clothing with their name.
Did you know that
Study club is every day of the week, except Wednesday; this is a great place
for your child to come and get homework completed with a teachers help.
PCS ART
This week in Art: The
K/1’s practiced their cutting and gluing skills while finishing their Apple Art
project. The 2/3’s used the Element of Art, Texture, to make lots of painted
paper. What fun we had! We
read the book “Pie in the Sky” by Lois Ehlert and began making paper collages
using the painted paper. In 4th grade Multicultural Art,
we finished the Rainsticks and learned about the next country in our travels –
Haiti.

Rodieck's

We
are pleased to announce that parents have offered to volunteer for Rodieck's
Roost. DCS students may now come to D7 during lunch on Modays and Thursdays for
help with homework or to work on projects. This is optional for them and is
only possible with the help of parent volunteers. Thank you, parents!
DCS

PHSA 7th and 8th
We
have had another great week in PHSA. Our
anti-bullying campaign is underway. We
are proud of the efforts that students have put in to their posters. It is a
great way to get the message out.
Science
Olympiad event sign up forms have been mailed home to parent coaches and hard
copies have been past out to our team members.
Please return the forms to Ms. Powers by October 18th.
A
friendly reminder to all parents and students.
It is important work is complete and on time. We do a lot at school but often, work may
need to be done at home as well. Work
that is not done or incomplete prevents students from learning and is the
reason we put so much emphasis on student work.
Students that do not complete their work suffer and we have consequences
in place to prevent that. If you ever
have trouble or have questions, be sure to speak to the teacher. We love to help!

a “How to Study” workshop in the homework support room from 4pm – 4:45pm. Students and parents are welcome! Additional information was included with the
