This is a good time of year to remember to say thank you.  I would like to thank:
o   Our students for being excited and dedicated learners
o   Our staff in the office for interacting with hurt or ill children as well as all the other jobs they do all day.
o   Our teachers for their commitment to our students and the work they do to prepare for class each day.
o   You, our parents, who have chosen our schools for your child’s education and your commitment to help your child do his or her best.
o   Together we make an amazing learning environment for your children and for us, I believe I speak for the entire staff when I say, “We are very fortunate to have the jobs we have with your children.”
Thanks!

PCS Sapphire
The Sapphire Team had a wonderful week of learning!
It was a pleasure to meet with all the parents for conferences. Thank
you for taking the time out of your day to meet with us. Parent
teacher collaboration is so important for the success of the children!

P1 students had a wonderful week learning about Thanksgiving!  They made Thanksgiving place mats, learned about the pilgrims, talked about what they are thankful for, and had a delicious feast!

P6 students wrote about what they are thankful for and a” how to” on making a pumpkin pie. We also had Thanksgiving fun with assorted kinds of pies and a movie.

P5 has been working on the California webquest. Ask your
student what they are researching. We have completed our first novel.
The students have put together a booklet of all the work they have
done relating to the book. You will be receiving this shortly.

For the holiday season our student council will be sending cards to VA hospitals.  This is an excellent time for you to get rid of half empty boxes of unused cards that you may have around the house.  The students will be writing greetings in them and they will go to injured or ill military men and women. These need to be sent in by December 6th.   Help us make their Holidays brighter!!!

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Break!!!

DCS 5th/6th
Parent/Teacher Conference:
First trimester student led parent-teacher conferences were held this week. It was an opportunity to reflect, discuss progress, and set goals with each child as an individual. Maximizing academic potential and success means something different for each student and we value the time you have given us to hear what students are striving for as they continue to challenge themselves to grow.

Report Cards:
Some of our DCS students received letter grade report cards for the first time in their academic history. They may not understand what a GPA is and how it is calculated. Still, GPA often defines their student record as they advance academically. Take the time to sit with your child to analyze the information on the report card. Students with a GPA of 3.5 or above will be given a certificate of honor for their academic achievement.

Donations:
Cold weather runny noses have led to a depleted stock of classroom tissue boxes. If you would like to help us replenish our stock please send donations to your child's homeroom teacher. Students appreciate using the soft tissues you supplied at the start of the school year. Thank you for your generosity!

Gold:
Chaperones for the Academy of Sciences fieldtrip have been selected by lottery and were notified Tuesday. Parents who expressed an interest in chaperoning, but were not selected by lottery will remain on a contact list in case there is a change in availability for any of those who received notification.

Bring your pictures and scrapbooks for SWO Monday, December 2! We are currently working on two Personal Awareness pages. Students will be receiving participation grades for using this time productively.

TLC Newsletter for the week of November 11th, 2013......

Charter Chatter
A weekly newsletter written to parents of the Tracy Learning Center

Nov. 15, 2013                                                                                       Vol. 15 No.15
Virginia Stewart

Did you know that every five years our charters are up for renewal?  The school district is our sponsoring agent.  We have to submit a petition to stay open as a charter every five years.  The Tracy District Board of Education decides to renew the charter or not.  This year, both Primary and Millennium are up for renewal.  We are in the process of writing the renewal petition.  There are several changes to the law regarding the way a charter petition is written, so we are working hard to get the renewal petition in order to send to the Board.

Once the petition is written and submitted to the School District, the district has sixty days to decide.  The first step is a public hearing at their board meeting; the second is an action item at the next board meeting.  We are trying to get the Millennium Charter petition to the school district by January and the Primary one to the district by February.

Please be aware we may need some of you to attend the public hearing meetings or find a way to voice your desire to have the charters renewed.  The difficult part of the petitions is that we are asking to relocate the high school to a different site nearby so that we can expand both Primary and Discovery to allow more of the students on the waiting list to attend our schools.  This may be a material change the district is not in favor of approving.

It is during times like this that I do not take for granted the special opportunity we have to be allowed to run charter schools separate from the school district.  It allows us such freedom and responsibility to provide a special and different education for our children.  I do not take that for granted!

PHSA 7th and 8th

This week in PHSA…..
In science, students completed their online investigation on Mixtures, Compounds, and Solutions and started a lab comparing elements, mixtures and compounds with sulfur and iron. Students will be taking an open-note test on Monday. Due to the test being open note, no study guide will be sent home.

In science enrichment, students have continued to learn about forces. This week we have been focusing on gravity and the roles it plays on our daily lives.

On Thursday evening, three PHSA students went to Dinner with a Scientist with Ms. Powers (through the San Joaquin County Office of Education). The students got to meet people that use science in their professions. Students got to ask questions to a variety of scientists, from a zoologist, a structural engineer, and many college professors!

Geometry is wrapping up their study of triangles and will round out the trimester with constructions of congruent triangles and designing a dance floor using congruent triangles.

Pre-Algebra is working towards a unit that really is PRE-algebra.  This trimester has been cementing skills needed for algebraic success.

Mrs.. Carr's Pre-Algebra is studying exponents and starting a unit on scientific notation....using exponents with powers of 10.  Mathematics is the language of science, so it is crucial to understand these concepts.

Friday, November 15th is the closing day for grade books. Teachers will be wrapping up all their grading and submitting the grades through Aeries. Parents will receive a copy of the report card in the mail.  If there are concerns, please contact the teacher directly or start with the homeroom teachers if there are several issues.  Thank you.

SWOs….some of you like these, some of you don’t, but they are here to stay.  We begin in Primary with activities students can do to show they are meeting SWO expectations, in middle school and PHSA, as well as high school, SWOs mean scrap books and project type work to meet the SWO requirement.

So, what is the purpose?  First SWO means: School Wide Outcome.  We have identified certain outcomes we want our students to achieve while learning academics and other skills as school.  These are areas for personal growth that should be enhanced by the work students do in school.  The projects are ways for students to demonstrate that growth.  The SWOs do not change from grade to grade, the names may be slightly different, but the area for growth is the same.  Over twelve years we are hoping that students will demonstrate a greater development of the area and a better understanding of what that area really means.

So, keep those scrapbook pages and look forward to the visual demonstration they will represent by the time your student finishes school with us.  Think of it like collecting all the years of school pictures.  That is how we can “see” physical growth.  SWOs are the way we can “see” emotional and personal growth as a result of school experiences.

Sapphire PCS
The Sapphire Team had a very productive week!
The SWO that the Sapphire Team worked on for the month of October was Productive worker.
The new “sparkling sapphire” students, who showed us how incredibly productive they were for the month of October are; from P1 Sahej Sethi, from P6 Cameron Johnson and from P5 Alan Chavez and Carson Edwards. These students ALL received certificates and gift cards….Congratulations!
P1 students have been hard at work on testing and assessing this week.  The students have also been working on writing letters to Veterans that will be delivered next week.
P6 students have been writing letters to Veterans to thank them for their service.  All students have been assessing this week for report cards.

P5 has nearly finished The Secret School. Students have been studying the plot structure. They noticed the climax of the book and now see that we are in the falling action. It was interesting to see that the rising action took most of the book! They also learned about prepositional phrases this week. They wrote poems and illustrated them! In math, we have been studying place value with decimals. This has led us into some fraction work and we have been practicing reducing fractions. Amazing, we could use our knowledge of factors for this!

Conferences will be held in the gym. Mrs. Bradley's and Mrs. Hawkins' conferences are on Monday, November 18th.  Please check your student's agenda for the conference time. It is stapled in. If, at the last minute, you cannot make it, please let Ms. Kay or Ms. Connie know in the office. They can let the teacher know. Sometimes we have cancellations and we might be able to find a better time for you during the day. :)

We are collecting powdered hot chocolate packets and store purchased cookies to send to 8 local military men, women and their units who will be deployed during this holiday season.  Look for information on how you can help with this great cause in your child’s green folder! All items need to be donated no later than Tuesday November 12, to allow us to get them to Military Moms of Tracy to ship overseas.
Parent Teacher conferences will be held the week of November 18 – 22; look for sign up times that will be coming home in your child’s folder.

Please make sure that your PCS child is supervised at all times after pick up in carline and while you are waiting for your DCS students.  PSC students are often playing/throwing tan bark and shouting right outside the administrative offices and classrooms where learning is still going on.

PCS ART
This week in Art:  The K/1’s learned about texture.  They played a texture sorting game, did texture rubbings, and began a texture art project. The 2/3’s made 3-D trees with tissue paper leaves.  They heard the story “Giraffes Don’t Dance” and began drawing their own dancing giraffes. 4th grade Multi-Cultural Art started making Tapa Cloth from the Pacific Islands.

DCS 5th/6th
Parent/Teacher Conference:
First trimester student led parent-teacher conferences will be held November 19th, 20th, and 21st. Conference schedule appointments were distributed this week in homeroom. If you wish to schedule a conference for a time other than what has been assigned for you please contact your child's homeroom teacher to make arrangements.

SWO (School Wide Outcomes):
The Personal Awareness SWO project and scrapbook were discussed this week and rubrics were distributed. Students should get an early start on this portion of the project to avoid the frustration of having a school assignment interfere with upcoming holiday breaks.
