SWOs….some of you like these, some of you don’t, but they
are here to stay. We begin in Primary
with activities students can do to show they are meeting SWO expectations, in
middle school and PHSA, as well as high school, SWOs mean scrap books and
project type work to meet the SWO requirement.
So, what is the purpose?
First SWO means: School Wide Outcome.
We have identified certain outcomes we want our students to achieve
while learning academics and other skills as school. These are areas for personal growth that
should be enhanced by the work students do in school. The projects are ways for students to
demonstrate that growth. The SWOs do not
change from grade to grade, the names may be slightly different, but the area
for growth is the same. Over twelve
years we are hoping that students will demonstrate a greater development of the
area and a better understanding of what that area really means.
So, keep those scrapbook pages and look forward to the
visual demonstration they will represent by the time your student finishes
school with us. Think of it like
collecting all the years of school pictures.
That is how we can “see” physical growth. SWOs are the way we can “see” emotional and
personal growth as a result of school experiences.

PE
We would also like to recognize the following students for earning shoe tokens for demonstrating respect and responsibility in PE: Hannah Riddle, Eileen Flores, Zachariah Quay, Ava Kaholi'i, Santiago Reynoso and Anthony Maita.
Primary PE is extremely happy with the turn out we had of students who signed up for the 100 Day Challenge. Willing to do their best to complete 100 push-ups and 100 sit-ups everyday for 100 days shows they are taking pride in their health and fitness!! Keep up the hard work...92 more days!!!
PCS Gold

Highlights:
Students of
the Month were announced at unity this week!! These students exemplified
excellent behavior all month long in October!
Reminders:
No
School this Monday, November 11th for Veterans Day!!
Thanksgiving
Break will be November 25th - November 29th!
Canned Food Drive: We
will be collecting canned food for the month of November for Tracy Interfaith.
The classroom that collects the most canned food will get a special treat!
Morning carline starts at
7:45. There are not teachers at morning carline until 7:45. Please do not drop
your child off and leave before 7:45 in the morning, as they will be
unsupervised. Do not leave your car unattended
during carline; this has been causing us problems getting carline started in
the afternoon.
Please make sure that your PCS
child is supervised at all times after pick up in carline and while you are
waiting for your DCS students. PSC students are often playing/throwing
tan bark and shouting right outside the administrative offices and classrooms
where learning is still going on.
Sapphire PCS
The Sapphire Team had a very productive week!
The SWO that the Sapphire Team worked on for the month of
October was Productive worker.
The new “sparkling
sapphire” students, who showed us how incredibly productive they were for the
month of October are; from P1 Sahej
Sethi, from P6 Cameron Johnson and
from P5 Alan Chavez and Carson
Edwards. These students ALL received certificates and gift
cards….Congratulations!
P1
students have been hard at work on testing and assessing this week. The students have also been working on
writing letters to Veterans that will be delivered next week.
P6 students
have been writing letters to Veterans to thank them for their service. All students have been assessing this week
for report cards.
P5
has nearly finished The Secret School. Students have been
studying the plot structure. They noticed the climax of the book and
now see that we are in the falling action. It was interesting to see that
the rising action took most of the book! They also learned about
prepositional phrases this week. They wrote poems and illustrated them! In
math, we have been studying place value with decimals. This has led us into
some fraction work and we have been practicing reducing fractions. Amazing, we
could use our knowledge of factors for this!
Conferences
will be held in the gym. Mrs. Bradley's and Mrs. Hawkins' conferences are on
Monday, November 18th. Please check your student's agenda for the
conference time. It is stapled in. If, at the last minute, you cannot make it,
please let Ms. Kay or Ms. Connie know in the office. They can let the
teacher know. Sometimes we have cancellations and we might be able to find a
better time for you during the day. :)
We are collecting
powdered hot chocolate packets and store
purchased cookies to send to 8 local military men, women and their units
who will be deployed during this holiday season. Look for information on how you can help with
this great cause in your child’s green folder! All items
need to be donated no later than Tuesday November 12, to allow us to get them
to Military Moms of Tracy to ship overseas.
Parent Teacher conferences will be held the week of November
18 – 22; look for sign up times that will be coming home in your child’s
folder.
Helpful Tips:
Please make sure that your PCS child is
supervised at all times after pick up in carline and while you are waiting for
your DCS students. PSC students are
often playing/throwing tan bark and shouting right outside the administrative
offices and classrooms where learning is still going on.
PCS ART
This week in Art: The
K/1’s learned about texture. They
played a texture sorting game, did texture rubbings, and began a texture art
project. The 2/3’s made 3-D trees with tissue paper leaves. They heard the story “Giraffes Don’t
Dance” and began drawing their own dancing giraffes. 4th grade
Multi-Cultural Art started making Tapa Cloth from the Pacific Islands.
DCS 5th/6th
Parent/Teacher
Conference:
First trimester student led parent-teacher
conferences will be held November 19th, 20th, and 21st. Conference schedule
appointments were distributed this week in homeroom. If you wish to schedule a
conference for a time other than what has been assigned for you please contact
your child's homeroom teacher to make arrangements.
SWO
(School Wide Outcomes):
The Personal Awareness SWO project and
scrapbook were discussed this week and rubrics were distributed. Students
should get an early start on this portion of the project to avoid the
frustration of having a school assignment interfere with upcoming holiday
breaks.
Note from Mrs. Wallace (Garnet):
"Our greatest glory is not in never
falling, but in rising every time we fall." -Confucius
Put on your philosopher hats! We are about to
start our fantastic adventure through China's ancient history.
Science
News:
Students
whose application letters were selected to attend the November 14th Dinner with
a Scientist event received information regarding the event from Ms. Pelaez
(lpelaez@tracylc.net) and Ms. Takeuchi (ttakeuchi@tracylc.net). Students who
submitted application letters, but were not selected to attend have been
offered an alternative evening of science fun on November 12th. Forms for both
events went home this week.
The Academy of Sciences (Gold) field trip
permission slip forms are still being accepted. Thank you for signing and
returning them before Monday, November 18th. We have many parents interested in
attending so a lottery system will be used to select chaperones. You will be
notified in a few weeks if you are chosen as a chaperone.
Science
Olympiad practices begin on November 13th 4:30 to 5:30. Any members and parents may attend. It is not mandatory but a great chance to get

PHSA 7th and 8th
In science, students continued
to learn about Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures. They also started an online
investigation that will be completed next week and will lead into a lab!
In science enrichment, students
have continued to learn about forces. This week we wrapped up the unit on
unbalanced forces. Next week we will begin to learn more about gravity.
In Language Arts this week we read both
chapters 3 & 4 of LOTF! The students are focusing on identifying and
tracking some of the main themes of the book for a PPT presentation that will
be given at the end of the unit. The students identified the following themes:
The Loss of Innocence, Civilization vs Savagery, The Nature of Evil, Man vs
nature, & The Negative Consequences of War!
We took our first LOTF Quiz
last week and over 1/3 of the students got perfect scores!
In Mr. Mitri’s class we expressed knowledge of vocabulary, literary terms,
and The Pearl in
the form of music videos in groups.
